DETOXING AGAINST AIR POLLUTION
What are heavy metal toxins and how can we combat their influence in our bodies?
AIR POLLUTION IN SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN
The Detroit-Warren-Ann Arbor metro area is now ranked as the 13th worst in the nation for pollution levels. Unfortunately, the American Lung Association has found that Wayne County failed to meet the updated federal pollution standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency. (source Lungassociation) Detroit’s numerous and large industrial pollution sources such as coal-fired power plants, steel facilities, and petroleum refineries contribute to higher levels of toxic metals in the air.
WHAT ARE HEAVY METAL TOXINS?
Heavy metals are toxic elements that can occur naturally in the environment, but can also be found at higher levels due to pollution and previous industrial uses. Some examples of heavy metals include arsenic, lead, mercury, and cadmium. These metals can bind to parts of cells, preventing organs from functioning properly, and can have harmful effects on human health. We generally interact with heavy metal toxins through inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact. Heavy metals can be found in the environment, in food and water, and in industrial settings.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR US?
Polluted air can cause difficulty breathing, flare-ups of allergies or asthma, and other lung problems. Long-term exposure to air pollution can raise the risk of other diseases, including heart disease and cancer. (source nih.gov)
Another effect of air pollution is increased inflammation in the body. Research shows that long-term exposure to air pollution can cause inflammation and increase the risk of many health problems. With climate change causing more wildfires, and with more vehicles on the road burning fossil fuels, scientists are discovering how polluted air affects the immune system’s ability to control inflammation. WHAT ARE REAL & EFFECTIVE METHODS OF DETOX?
There are different ways to offset the toxic burden we carry as a consequence of urban/modern living beyond the basic acts of exercise, hydration, and having a robust sleep schedule. At Meta Physica we offer private infrared sauna treatments. Studies have shown that saunas serve as a valuable clinical tool for addressing cardiovascular, autoimmune, toxicant-induced, and various other chronic health conditions.
A 2012 study shows that arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury can be significantly expelled through the skin. In a 24-hour period, the amount excreted through the skin via sweating can equal or even surpass the amount excreted through urine. Evidence suggests that sauna sessions for sweating is a low-risk and potentially helpful treatment for people affected by toxic elements or those regularly exposed to toxins.(source ncbi)
More studies indicate that sauna bathing may reduce the risk of heart disease. One particular study tracked 2,300 sauna bathers over 20 years and found that those who used the sauna more frequently (four to seven times a week) had lower death rates from heart disease and stroke. (study)
Massage therapy can also help your body flush toxins out by improving circulation, which can release toxins from tissues into the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system then filters and removes the toxins from the body.
As we continue to move into an age of climate malfunction and legislative battles that affect the levels of pollution in the air, it is important to regularly detox in plentiful ways. High levels of these toxics can lead to low energy levels, illnesses, or even long lasting degenerative conditions. Crafting a regular detoxing practice into your schedule could make a major difference in your daily experience, as well as your overall livelihood.
